Planning such an event often seems too difficult - especially without a professional to help you.
So, follow these steps to make the planning easier:
1 - Who will officiate? First, choose a person who is accustomed to public speaking - someone who will help you to prepare what you will say (e.g. vows) and the timing of the ceremony.
2 - Who is involved? Ask your respective parents, your witnesses or your friends - but keeping the pressure low, considering that speaking in front of others may be difficult for some. No long speeches are necessary... just a few simple words are often enough to express their love and support.
3 – The order of the ceremony? Most of the time, the official you choose welcomes the guests and explains the type of ceremony that the couple has chosen. Next, the bride and groom may speak of their commitments to each other, as well as any guests they wish participate. Finally, there is the exchange of rings and the conclusion by the presiding official. Voila!
4 - Should we set it to music? In this personalized setting, with so much more flexibility than in a church, the couple can choose the type and amount of music that says the most about their love - for all to enjoy! I would say it MUST be set to music!
5 - Can we add another "ceremony"? If traditions are different among the couple and their families, why not honor them both! You can opt for sand, candles, wine, ribbons… whatever honors those traditions.
6 – And, of course, the decor? Again, this is an expression of who you are… An altar or an arch, decorated with sheer, an isle strewn with petals or carpet, perhaps lined by pikes with hanging flowers or ribbons...chairs tied with bows…
7 – and… please do not forget the music afterwards! Find a great DJ that plays exactly what you want to hear. Better yet, how about some live music to suit your style!
